Drawing a circle in perspective
By Matthew Miles
Circles can be sketched in perspective by developing the squares that contain them. It is important to understand the occurrence of foreshortening and follow the long/ short axis’ of the square. A) The circle touches the square at the midpoints of the sides. And is tangential at these points. B) The circle crosses the diagonal, always perpendicular, at about 5/7th (between 2/3 & ¾) from the centre. The drawing steps are as follows; 1.Sketch the square that contains the circle according to it's vanishing points. 2.join the diagonals to find the center of that square. 3.using the appropriate vanishing point the centre can now be projected to find the midpoints of the sides 4.The long and short axis’ can be found on the diagonal. It is difficult to measure and really best estimated for sketching purposes. 5. draw the ellipse using these points take care to stay perpendicular to diagonals and tangent to sides.
